Among man's most important discoveries and inventions, there is no doubt that vaccines have a very special place. However, it is also a fact that these sometimes are not much appreciated. This discovery brought about the creation of the world's first vaccine, one which ultimately helped millions worldwide and now smallpox is virtually irradicated.
Vaccines can be differentiated into different types. The differentiation may be based on how these work in order to protect people from a number of diseases while triggering the immune system to work its best against harmful microorganisms. Killed, toxoid, attenuated, conjugate, valence, subunit, and experimental are the different types. The difference between killed vaccines and attenuated ones is that the former is made up of microorganisms that is already not capable of doing harm while the latter is made of live microorganisms that do not have the bad qualities any more.
It may sound strange but toxoid vaccines actually came from toxic compounds, which is why it is very different from the others. Subunit vaccines are not much different from the others since it is made up of parts only of beneficial microorganisms.
