Studies have shown, that mature women who wear nail polish are perceived to actually be younger, than those that do not. Photographs of mature women showing just their hands, some wearing polish, others not. Have shown that in 50% of those wearing polish, were actually seen to look younger. It's a well known fact that our hands are a big signal to our true age. Given that we are unable to apply makeup to our hands, it's important to do what we can to keep them looking younger and if it's as simple as having a good manicure to keeping our youth, then more power to us.
Many women tend to use a coarse nail file to shape the tip and 'sidewall' of their nails. First of all, do not use a harsh nail file and secondly do not file the 'sidewall' of your nails. The file to use, is one that is made of crystal glass, they are more expensive, but are worth the investment and last longer. Use the file on the tip of your nails only and do not touch the 'sidewall' - if you file the 'sidewall' of your nails, this can weaken them and make them more prone to tearing. Be aware of the length of your nails too. Older women have tendency to wear their nails much longer. A good rule of thumb is to keep your nail length less than inch from the tip of the finger. Doing so creates a more youthful appearance. When I perform manicures or Gel Polish in Nicosia Cyprus, I always advise clients to not go too long.
What ever you do, do not cut your cuticles at all. They are there for a reason. To protect the growth bed of your nail, by removing the cuticle, you are exposing the growing part of your nail, which can lead to ridging and thinning nails. If your cuticles are long, simply use a quality natural cuticle cream and a cuticle stick to move them back gently.
Nail preparation before you apply any polish is key to a successful manicure. Getting your nails looking stunning before you paint them is the key to a beautiful manicure. Some nails, especially older nails, can have build up yellow staining. This is usually from the result of using poor quality varnish, rather than the myth that your nails are not receiving enough fresh air. To return your nails to a more natural luster, slice a lemon and rub the wedge over your nails. The natural acids in the lemon will remove any tainting.
When choosing a polish, it's important to understand that older nails, despite a lot of work, can still appear a little ragged. To disguise imperfections in your nails, it's a good idea to use a pale metallic polish, the gel polish from OPI are a good starting point. The design of these metallic polishes reflects more light and hide imperfections more than standard nail polish.
Once you have applied your polish, the key to a long lasting manicure is in the application of a quality thicker top coat. Many salons tend to use thin top coats. Partly because they require less time to dry, but also, this means your manicure will not last as long and you will want to return sooner to have another. Invest in a quality thick quick drying top coat - Revlon do have some good topcoats.
Take supplements to save your nails from breaking. Excessive breakages tend to signal a reduction in the B vitamin biotin. Also, if you swim a lot in public pools or in the sea, your nails can be further damaged by chlorine and salt. Taking a 2.5mg dose of B vitamin or a quality multi vitamin that has the B vitamin, can thicken your nails by up to 25%, making them stronger, firmer, more flexible and less likely to tear or split.
Do not use acetone to remove old nail polish. Acetone will dry out your nails faster than anything. Use a quality natural alternative if available. Your local drug store will have many alternatives to acetone. Using acetone also produces very unpleasant fumes that are detrimental to your health.
