A lot of people find themselves taking too long in their custom wine cellar because they cannot decide which wine to pair their food with. Pairing wine with food can be a challenge because wine can either make your simple dish taste better or ruin it entirely.

When it comes to pairing wine with food, there isn't really a strict rule to follow. Some might find certain food and wine pairs delicious while others may not find it to their taste at all. Because of this, the most important thing in food and wine pairing is that the pair you choose appeals to your taste as well as the tastes of your guests.

Although there is no strict rule on food and wine pairing, a lot of people still want a general guideline to follow because they feel uncertain when experimenting by themselves. In this article, you will learn basic guidelines for food and wine pairings that are generally accepted.

The first guideline is on pairing wine with certain appetizers. Light and fruity types of wine (such as Chardonnay) are best paired with seafood appetizers (e.g. oysters and crab cakes). If you are serving red and white meat appetizers such as chicken wings or antipasto, it is best to pair these with a red spicy wine (such as the Pinot Noir).

The next guideline applies to dinner. Consider serving a Pinot Grigio or something similar with a seafood dinner (e.g. shellfish and fish). This type of wine is also good paired with ham, veal or pork. Red wines (such as the Shiraz) pair well with both white and red meats because its sweetness complements almost all meals. It is indeed a very versatile type of wine.

The final things to learn is how to best pair wine with certain desserts. If you are serving a dessert like a souffle or an angel food cake (which aren't particularly sweet) , consider pairing it with a Madeira. If you are planning to serve rich chocolate desserts or a cheesecake, you might find pairing it with Port wines to be a good option. Sherry wine is best paired with peanut butter-based desserts.

These are merely suggestions on how to pair food and wine. Keep in mind that the perfect pair really depends on what suits your taste. It is advisable to experiment on pairing different kinds of wine with different food so that you can observe which ones appeal to your personal preference.
